The Beginner's Guide to Website Development

Web development is the process of creating and maintaining websites. It is a broad term that consists of many different web development skills and disciplines including:

·         Frontend development: This is the process of creating the visual element of a website. Frontend means creating the view aspect of a website such as the layout, design, and interactions of the website.  You go website and you see the button colored nicely, the navigation bars, some animations, and others. These are the work of the front-end developers. Frontend developers use languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

·         Backend development: This is the process of creating the functionality of a website, such as a database, server, and application logic. An instance will be when you visit the Facebook login page. You simply put in your email and password in the form and your profile will be opened just by clicking the login button. That is the function of the backend development. It will fetch your information from the Facebook database and display them to the user on the profile page. Backend development comprises all the services that run in the background of the website. Backend developers use languages like PHP, Python, and Java.


Why learn web development?

·         It Pays to be a web developer: People are really making it out with web development, and for me, it’s that kind of carrier where you only do less and get more. Most people say programming is fun and interesting and I will attest to this fact. So, imagine doing something that makes you happy and being paid a huge amount as well.

·         It’s a growing field: The demand for web developers is constantly increasing as more and more businesses and organizations are moving their operations to online and this has placed a lot of demand on web developers. Learning web development is a skill that is worth it.

·         It’s a flexible skill: web development is a dynamic and flexible skill. Developers can work in varieties of industries, from e-commerce to healthcare to education and others. With this, web developers have the chance to choose from wherever they want to master, and besides, a whole lot of opportunities are available to the web developer.

·         It’s a good way to start your own business: Web development makes it so easy to create and launch your own website or web application. There are various online platforms such as Fiver, Upwork, and Freelancer where web developers build web applications or websites for customers, and they earn income. Aside from that, web developers can also create websites and sell them to industries and companies for a huge gain. Moreover, due to the increasing number of businesses moving their operations online, web developments, therefore, make it easy to earn income when developers build web applications for the target companies.

·         It’s a creative and challenging field: Web development is a constantly evolving field, which means there’s always something new to learn. As you learn, you always want to learn. I must say that web development is very addictive, once you get acquainted with the beauty of coding, you always want to code. It is very fun and educative as well.


How to get started with web development?

If you are interested in learning web development, there are a few things you can do to get started:

1.     Take an online course: There are many courses available online such as Udemy and Udacity that can teach you web development. The only thing you need is to get a good instructor to explain the concept to you well. You can also get available courses on YouTube to learn web development. You can check out my courses on YouTube as well and am sure you will like them.

2    Read books and articles: Web development is all about learning new technologies and there are so many books and articles available online to take care of that. The goal is not to be comfortable with what you have, always try and get to the level of the web development industries by following best practices. This is done through reading books and articles.

3.       Practice: The best way to learn web development is not by watching videos or online courses. You only learn by practicing, that is all about web development. Start by creating simple websites and then gradually work your way up to more complex projects. Go online, clone websites, try and do the same, and challenge yourself to be better and you will surely be.

4.     Get involved in a community or forum: There are many online and offline communities where you can connect with other developers and learn from them. You can also join my community on telegram where I teach programming with a lot more practical for my students. You never want to be alone, get in touch, and move to the next level.
